2013 - The year of the Volunteer

Marshals and recovery set about sorting out the aftermath of a particularly eventful BTCC Race.

Marshals and Scrutineers work together to make sure all is in order
The Motor Sports Association, governing body of UK motor sport, will launch its ‘Year of the Volunteer’ at the Autosport International show to be staged at the NEC, Birmingham from 10-13 January 2013

Celebrating the invaluable work carried out by volunteers and encouraging others to get involved, the MSA’s ‘Go Motorsport’ display stand will highlight the many opportunities open to volunteers ranging from trackside marshalling and timekeeping to technical scruntineers and event officials.

Not all doctors wear white coats.
It is often said ‘without volunteers there would be no motor sport’ and that truly is the reality,” said Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of the MSA. “From the British Grand Prix and Wales Rally GB, to the many thousands of local events organised by enthusiastic motor clubs throughout the land, none of them would happen without the expertise and generosity of these volunteers. Motor sport, though, is a fantastically exciting attraction and for those who want to get involved but, for whatever reason, don’t actually want to compete, there are lots of ways for them to get really close to the action by performing some of these hugely rewarding roles.”

You can't park that there!
To assist interested newcomers to understand the many exciting opportunities available, the Go Motorsport exhibit at Autosport International will include a special ‘help desk’ manned by experienced volunteers. The stand will also include a fully equipped rescue vehicle while for the more technically minded a team of engineers will be busy building a Formula 1000 entry-level rally car. Of further interest to budding scrutineers will be a pair of vehicles each with five built-in faults. Visitors will be invited to spot these defects for a chance to win tickets to the British Grand Prix and Wales Rally GB.

Way back in September 2011, our very own Rosemary John found out about the work of the Marshals - check it out here!

Coming Soon : Flags and heavy Metal

Rosie brandishes the "Jaws of Life"
It's almost here! The April Edition of Overdrive is nearly completed and features Rosemary John training with the Marshals at Pembrey circuit, and a high speed ride around Walter's Arena in Glynneath.

We had a great time at the training day at Pembrey and we're sure that you'll find the resulting film interesting. If after watching it you have an urge to don orange overalls and head for your nearest race track, here's some links for anyone who's interested in becoming a Marshal.

Please note, this list is far from exhaustive and that Overdrive can't offer anyone advice on getting started - but we can put you in touch someone who can - Drop us a line through the comment system on this page.

Finally we'd like to thank everyone at Pembrey circuit and BARC - not least the Marshals and Rescue Crew - for putting up with us filming during the day. It really is much appreciated!
